I would actually go with the Kia Sorento. Much better dollar value, and the Montero is being discontinued. The Montero is bigger and tougher, but the Sorento looks much nicer, is cheaper, and is more practical. But if you like old-school SUVs, the Montero is the one to go with- it has lots of ground clearance and looks very rugged. Still, I think the Sorento would be a much better choice, especially if you're not planning on going off-road.

I agree. BUY AMERICAN! Kia is in financial trouble so going with them may make it difficult at a later date for parts and service, too.

How about a Ford Focus or if you want a little bigger the Ford Fusion is EXCELLENT and reasonably priced. I love mine. It is peppy (only a 4 cyl, too), looks classy and gets thirty miles to the gallon.

only in the sense that a mitsubishi has a better fancier reputation. practically any company (like kia) who has the balls to give a 10 year warranty has got to be better

Mitsubishi will have a far greater resell value in 1, 2, 3 years. Check KBB.com and see for yourself.
