it's actually 'behind every great man' it means that men that have achieved great things had a woman that supported him,

It could mean that the man got recognized as being great first and the woman had to take second place. It could also mean that while the woman didnt get the credit her support helped the man to achieve greatness. This saying really doesnt apply anymore in a world where men and women have equal chances at achieving greatness. Perhaps a more up to date saying would be "No one achieves greatness without help from others"

Women like to interpret this as meaning that the success of a great man is attributable to the support and encouragement that he has received from his wife.
The reality is somewhat different. A woman's role in a man's success normally is one (or both) of the following:

1. The excessive wants and subsequent financial drain on the man force him down the road to success in order to avoid ruin.
2. In order to escape the persistent nagging and moaning, the man spends more time at work and success ensues.

Behind every great man there's a great woman.

Wives are known to have supported the great men in history as their confidants, sounding boards, and advisors. They usually managed the day to day affairs of their personal lives allowing the man freedom to concentrate on what he was attempting to accomplish.

It means he has a woman supporting him in every sense. Not just by words, but she makes sure he has a decent meal, his clothes are washed, pressed and mended. I don't mean it in the demeaning sense, but if all he has to concentrate on is building up his business, it really helps. She also makes sure the children are up in bed before any prospective clients come round for dinner.
She also has to take care of herself, and socialise with people in many situations, including people she cannot stand, in order to help obtain business contacts.
Also if she can keep the accounts, it will save money employing someone, as it is in both their interests.
This is when if he dumps her for a younger model later on, she will have a valid claim on maintenance!

It is a compliment meaning that all that they do they attribute to their partner. Bear in mind that this phraseology came about in a different era but a women was behind the scene supporting him emotional, encouraging, assisting him, listening to his ideas.

As a female out in the work place my husband does a great job of supporting me but if he did not work or I did not work some one could streamline your life so that you could concentrate on the external world and one of you could concentrate on the internal (home world).

Hope that helps

In refernce to married men receiving a lot of support from a female freind/girlfreind/wife. From personal experiance a lot of blokes would have quit their endevers if they had not had support from their better half. They are the best support a man can have, it's a pity we don't tell them that often enough.

A good woman will make her man feel like a king thus he will be happy and treat others well also. So, usually if you meet a sincere, happy, well adjusted guy...10 to 1 he is taken by a great lady.

It means, being only a man, he couldn't do it on his own and needed a good woman to support him. They (we) usually stay in the background and let the man concerned take all the credit. Rest assured though, we know how good we are !
