It says that either there is no sound card or it was not installed.
Can anyone tell me an easy way to find out if I even have a sound card?

Easy way ..take it back to where ever you bought it from they should have a responsibility to check it for you.. if not...

The short sharp easy answer is that ..... you look to where your speakers are plugged in to...
If you have no speakers plugged in then you just look on the back for a phono socket...the same as a headphone socket but it will have a little simbol with an arrow pointing outwards. If you have one of those (i think HP colour code there plug holes like Dell so it might be green or purple) then you have some form of sound device in your computer.
If you haven't said wheather it is a laptop.. but if it is then there will be a device in there.
If you are getting a message then it may actually be referring that the device was not installed correctly.
You need to look at your device manager.... right click my computer and choose properties. You will get a box open up. depending on what operating system you have (im presuming windows) you can see a hardware tab (look through each tab if not) and you can find a device manage button/option..choose it.
another window will open up and you will see a list of stuff and hopefully there maybe is a simbol next to one of them ( sound device) which will suggest that it hasnt been installed properly.double click on it....
Wheather there is a symbol or not..choose your sound device usually under something like "sound, video, game controllers" the list will expand and you should see your sound device.. double click it....

you will see a general tab that will show a device status if there is a problem it will tell you what .... usually you can choose to install driver.... or update and depending on your operating system and your internet connection it will go off and find one.... if everything is showing ok on this tab and try for update anyway just in case..unfortunatly if one isnt found then you may have a deeper problem...eg, the device it too old... then you will have to try to find a website for the device and hope they have a device support section where you can download a driver.depending on the operating system you can sometimes trigger an install by refreshing the list.

Do NOT! delete anything because depending on the plug and play status of the device it may not reinstall itself and will ask you for a driver that you may not have.. then you are stuck aswell.

If there are no audio device then you will have to use "Add device" in Control panel that will automatically search for device on your computer that arent installed..

Plug and Play devices remove there entries on this list when they are uninstalled so if you are using a desktop computer then someone may have remove it before giving it away... as some sound cards are quite expensive pieces of kit.

Sorry if i have gone off in the completely wrong direction.. but if you are familiar with computers you know that there can be so many factors that can cause something to stop.

In Windows then go to Start/Programs/Accessoires/System Tools/ And then Click System Information. This will list all the Information about your computer. You might not have a sound card but have intergrade sound. You might have to update your drivers so this will also tell what kind of sound device you have.

Try to install sound driver. Or check if there is a sound card. You can see the back panel of the computer. if there are audio plugs there is a card. these plugs are similar to the plugs of your mp3 player. if there are, just try to install the drivers from the CD which supports your main board. if there is no CD this is bad. But i think that the OS can support it with some default drivers.
