Because the super powers in the world dont really care for human rights. All they care about is money money money. 100 human being die in Africa is fine for them but one petroleum drop to be lost is not bareable. Also the terrorists in the middle east are destroying the great countries while africans are not.

Yes, we are blind to much of what goes on in the world that is not reported on the daily/nightly news in the US. Have you ever watched the BBC news on cable? Talk about getting another point of view...it is amazing... When it becomes important to us through forums like this then it will become important to the media....then the world...and yes, oil has a lot to do with it...face it the price of oil effects our economy on a daily basis. And as long as the men who run our country have an interest in it that will be our focus as a country. Not right..of course it isn't. But then again who said we had to solve the world's problems anyway? I have a hard time anymore accepting that we have to do the worlds dirty work and act like a police force...where is the UN? Isn't that what it is supposed to take care of? Just a thought...

I hate to answer a question with a question, but why does the world turn to the USA to solve THEIR problems? Yes, what is going on in various countries on the African continent (and in the middle east) is terrible, and no one wants to see that, but the laws here do not allow us to go somewhere and take action if there is no threat to us. We are a nation of law. Do you hear those countries complaining to the UN? Isn't this kind of stuff supposed to be their charter?

Middle east? Sure - its in our interest to take action and make an attempt to stablize the region, as they have hit us hard - not just on 9/11, but many times!

For those that say that we are there to protect the oil, let me just say that this is definately in our interest, as we are too afraid to interrupt the mating habits of animals to put in a new oil field on our own soil (Anwar) or in the Gulf of Mexico. Do you know that the Chinese are drilling in the gulf TODAY and have huge expansion plans there because we backed away from it? More "special interest" of something like that.

You want to know why? Because we've TRIED to help the African countries. Many times. It never works. ALL of our military action in every single country we've attempted to help on the continent of Africa has FAILED.
It is partly because there is no profit, but not in the way you think. It has nothing to do with oil, and everything to do with our military.
The Middle East is a breeding ground for terrorists, who have been attacking us for over twenty-five years. Yes, over twenty-five years!
NO ideology from Africa has attempted that, although some countries may be guilty of assisting in arming terrorists.
Iraq and Afghanistan will serve as our footholds in the Middle East (if we succeed), and help us to protect our one true ally in the region: Israel.
THAT'S why people are so worried about the Middle East.

You are certainly right about the plight of Africa. But honestly, Americans are "hung up" on the Middle East because the radicalist groups represent a direct threat to our nation. You can be sad about your poor, starving neighbors, but most people tend to take action more quickly when someone is threatening them directly. It's just a fact of life.

Somali- oh look, we tried, then the prez at the time left.

Middle East- oh look, were trying, now the world wants us out, even though the middle east can harm the rest of the world

Me- oh look, so much hipocrisy, why doesn't the rest of the world help out? I don't care because people are just going to be hypocrites again.

I say we should help them, but we can not.

It is not about oil mam, I think you need to do some researching

Are you an American? We're obsessed because we're at war there. Oil is a consideration and the oil companies expect the Republicans to do a better job of protecting their interests -- 83% of all donations by oil and gas companies went to the Republican party.

There is no oil in Africa. Bush is interested only in the Middle East because of oil which is their family business.

It's mostly because of oil! The USA, and Europe is dependent on their oil. Thus, the USA won't stay out of their business.

The middle east is a mess, and most of the nations are dictatorships, with little regards for human rights.

And they blame Isreal for ALL of their problems. It is rediculous.

Hey, do your research before stating untrue facts.

ITS NOT LIKE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THAT HARD TO HELP THEM. IS IT BECAUSE WE CANT PROFIT FROM THEM, THEY ARE OIL LESS?

They do have oil in Africa, and African oil will supply about one quarter of our use in the next decade.
