i am 6 weeks pregnant and i know its a bit early to think about maternity leave, but i work part time in a high school.
as i work ina school and only get the set holidays when the school is closed this means i will be on maternity leave throughout 2 sets of holidays(the summer, 6 weeks) and october(2 weeks).
does this mean i wont get holiday pay but just the materninty pay which is less than my wage

you will be entitles to maternity pay but also you should be entitled to income support while recieving maternity pay because your income is low in the first place. also ask your midwife about the sure start maternity grant. you could be entitled to upto £500 plus also register for child tax credits then you get your child beneifit aswel. if you need help with benefits etc... contact the job centre or benifits agency they will be happy to help as best they can. good luck

Best bet is to look at the schools policies for pay. I have answered this question before about 5 weeks ago. Also check out the following web links and read up on it. As you're a teacher part time i cant give you accurate advice but you will be entitled to ssp as well as esp depending on how long you've worked there for.
Are You Eligible?

To determine your eligibility, you must meet the following requirements:

Employed by the same employer for a consecutive 26 weeks and into the 15th week before the baby is due
Earning an average of £84 per week prior to taxes


How Much Can You Claim?

You may claim your benefits in two manners:

90% of your average weekly earnings for the first 6 weeks of your maternity leave
Either £108.85 or 90% of your average earnings (if your average earnings is less than £108.85 for the remaining 20 weeks)

How Do You Get Paid?

You will receive your payment in the same manner that you earn your normal wages.

Maternity Pay is treated as wages and your employer will be required to deduct taxes and National Insurance.


Statutory Maternity Pay


If you are expecting a baby, you may be eligible for Statutory Maternity Pay. This is a payment that will be made by your employer while you are Maternity Leave.

Sorry I cant help much. I'm assuming your in the UK too though, I have just heard that the maternity laws are changing. If your baby is due on or after the 1st April 2007 you get 39 weeks paid maternity leave instead of 26 weeks (as it is now) and maternity pay is paid for 39 consequtive weeks so I can only ASSUME you'd get paid even through the school holidays!

EDIT: I believe you are entitled to SMP (at least) as long as you earn enough to pay NI (doesnt matter whether it is part time or not)

You actually get maternity pay? Lucky you! I'm a teacher too...

I had to use sick leave days, and still got docked $256 a day for 13 days off of my paychecks for this whole year.

You will not have to worry about the summer part. What they do is take your pay for the nine months you actually teach and divide it out over 12 to give you a check every month.

As long as you have enough sick days to cover what you miss during the reghular school year, you should be okay also. Just know that if you miss any days over your regular sick days that they dock you at your daily rate for every day you miss, at least here in GA they do.

And don't forget to use your disability insurance if you have it!!!

I take it you would normally receive full wages throughout the hols, maternity works in the same way and is payable at the rates above regardless of the time of year.

I dont think you get maternity pay, but if you dont apply for maternity leave and just wait for the summer to leave they will pay you for holidays, if you are on maternity leave already when summer or october comes you wont get holiday pay

When you are on maternity leave you are still allowed to acrue your holiday pay. This means if you are entitled to holiday pay while you are off, your employers are obliged to pay you. Talk to the organisation below and they will be able to give you more detailed advice.

If you are in the U.K you will not get holiday pay but maternity pay. This depends on what borough you work in. Your employers will inform you of this

I have no idea....i didnt even know that your job pays you to get pregnant and go on leave....goodluck and congratulations! you proably should ask whoever works at your school....if they've been pregnant before and how they went about doing it...or whoevers in charge...goodluck and congratulations!
