Put on some gloves and get the rat out there. That is a health hazard, and beyond that, leaving it there is just disgusting.

Unless you can get someone to dispose of it for you...my suggestion is to get some rubber gloves, a large trash bag, a broom & dustpan.
You may want to get a face mask or a scarf to put around your nose & mouth (you don't know what if any bacteria could be eminating from the rat). And you don not want to leave it there to rot away. That won't solve anything, and who knows if there is more than one. There could be another mouse in your home.
Use the broom, sweep the rat into the dusptan--toss in into the trash bag and if you are near an incinerator, toss it out.
As for your kids room, leave the windows open. You may want to leave the room unoccupied for now and disinfect surfaces with bleach or Lysol.
Be VERY sure to do a thorough inspection to see if there are any holes in your home where the rat could have came from. Seal them up with steel wool. Keep trash covered with lids, Avoid leaving food or drinks out for rats.
And use sticky traps. D-Con is great, but as seen, they can die anywhere. Once mice/rats get stuck in sticky traps, it can make it hard (but not impossible) for them to escape.

This is the side effect of poisoning mice and rats, death. The critters are little and they can crawl into openings and spaces that humans do not even realize are there.
Unless you want to tear your walls/floor/ceilings out to find him, I am afraid you will just have to live with the smell until he rots away. Other option (if you are in a colder climate) would be to shut the heat off to that room and open the windows. But that would only delay the inevitable decay.
Yuck, if that smell was in my kids room, she would be sleeping in my bed for a while.

i admire Joe B's thought - yet once you had a cat this would not have befell! recommend on an identical time as purchase a pungent plug in, do away with the decon and get a cat they're generally loose! consume little or no bathe themselves and buiry their mess! So what you ought to vaccume slightly greater or take a sticky to the settee or to the mattress unfold yet i might quite try this then have a rotting rat in my abode any day!

You gotta get it out of the house. I know what your saying, I too would have to call a friend to get it for me. I hate all dead things and so if you can call someone to help you, if not use the shovel and that way you don't have to touch it and it is far enough away to make it difficult to see how dead it is. Man, I don't envy you.
Good luck with all that.

You need to get rid of it!!! Use a plastic bag, stick your hand inside and pick up the rat. Then turn the bag inside out and throw it in the garbage.

If you have rats in your home, you need help. If you leave dead rats in your childrens room to rot, you are past getting help.

What you need is to get that out, a.s.a.p before you get maggots. And they are alot worse to clean up.Pick up the dead one with a shovel,or something similar, go out and bury it. than put a cloth soaked in ammonia,in the room. that will take care of the smell. than clean the area with hot water, dish soap, and bleach.
