Many people are like sheep and don't think for themselves. If it is on TV or in the newspapers it must be true. Some of us think for ourselves and are turned off by meaningless smut but it works well for them with many others.

No a negative ad does not encourage me to vote, unless it is for the person that they are smearing.
Negative ads by candidates are their way of showing you that they don't think that the general public are smart enough to make their decisions on the issues at hand. So they try to dig up dirt on the other guy, hoping that it is worse than the other party has dug up on them, and it then becomes who did what, where, and with whom. It has nothing even resembling a election based on issues of the public.

I think that negative ad's actually have the other effect on voters, they tend to not vote. I myself will vote regardless, but I think less of a candidate that stoops so low as to bring up dirty laundry. These days with all candidates doing it is hard to sort it out. I do think that a voting record or a philosophy is fair game, however family matters is not.

I vote regardless, and just ignore the negative stuff and look for the facts. The nicest guy in the political arena is going to turn and fight with anything he's got when the mud-slinging starts.

Actually when I see a Negative ad about a person I usually end up voting for the person that is being insulted and maligned.
I can accept the fact that it is easier to malign someone than it is to boster your own position but in my opinion this is not the way to go.
Take stock of which party is running the negative ads!
I do!
And it appears to me that many more of the negative ads are being sponsored by the Republican party.
What does this tell you about them?
It tells me not to vote for them!
