As many as you want and can afford. Unfortunately the job of being a stay-home-mom goes so unappreciated by many. Being a stay-home-mom is alot of work, it's not a 9-5 job where you come home pick-up the remote and watch the tube, it's a 24 hour a day job, with no vacation or sick pay or even sick day's off, no matter how we feel. Moms are the first one's up and the last one's to go to bed. During the first year of life a mom looses 400 hours of sleep. So you do what you feel is right for your family.

I was in your shoes for a long time. My son was 2 when I moved back in with my parents. And even then I could only work evevnings because I couldnt afford daycare. Even on welfare. The state I lived in wouldnt pay for daycare. But many states will pay for it if your child is in a state approved program. But you should only go back to work when you are comfortable leaving your child. The state will usually only help cover expenses until your child is 5 not 6. So waiting until the child is in 1st grade is not necessarily a good idea.
If you have any more questions feel free to email me. I was a single mom until my sons dad and I reconciliated and got married when he was 3. And before then I only worked intermittently because of daycare costs.

Hmm not sure about this one so many people have so many views. I believe it is better for your child if you are working and fetching in a regular income. This way they can have all of the nice things in life. However I also believe that the first year of a childs life is the most special. Their first word, step, expression etc i was a sucker for this. Thats why i worked in the evening when my partner was home and it was time for my daughter to sleep.
It was easier for me because i had my partner there. I dont know maybe take a year out then go back.

That's a difficult one to answer for me because i'm a single mum my daughter is 16 now so i'm free to go to work now but i wish i'd done it from her being young so i could have offered her more choices in her young life...

At least the first year....In Canada we get a full year maternity leave. If you are single and still choose not to work to raise your child and live on Welfare, most people won't criticize you (at least not until they go to school)....as long as you are being a good mom.
Harrison N should learn to write proper English before criticizing others on their English.

As few as possible. The less time that your in work, the lower your pension will be. Im not saying abandon your child but you need to look after your own future too.

I don't think that any mom should have to be off work. It is a personal choice, as soon as the single parents feels the need she should return to work as with any other mom!

At least til the kid's old enough for full time school. Then you can get a job that fits in with their school hours.
