Lab coat, safety glasses, gloves, long hair tied back, no eating, drinking smoking or taking medication in the lab. Wash you hands on leaving the lab. If a substance give off hazardous fumes use a fume hood. Solvents stored in locked solvent cupboard, posions stored in locked poisons cabinet. Acids and Alkalis stored seperately (they react explosively with each other). Keep flames away from any flammable liquids. Turn on a bunsen flame when 'yellow' then turn air hole to give blue flame. Clear up any spills immediately and inform appropriate person of any major spill. Any accidents should be reported (entered into an incident book).

COSHH forms written for any proceedure where any 'substance hazardous to health' is used. MSDS- Material safety data sheets, provided by manufacturers with any hazardous substance list any hazards of working with that chemical. Learn the symbols and meanings of corrosive, irritant, harmful, toxic, flammable, extremely flammable.
