I feel it's so popular because it is all narrated through the eyes of a little girl, and at any stage it remains so naive that you are convinced it's a child and not actually an adult telling the story.
It deals with a little girl (Gem) and her brother (Scout)
Their mother has passed away and they live with their father (a respected lawyer in the community), somewhere in the deep South of the USA. (I think Alabama)
The have a few adventures and then her father has to defend a black man in court for a rape case (this book is set back in the day, when racism was rife, and even though it's obvious the black man is innocent, the jury need a lot of convincing)
It is a beautiful tale, and I would really recommend you read it, or watch the film.
