Sen. Joe McCarthy's ideas brough paranoia about communist takeover to our society. He led the investigation of Hollywood workers who were suspected of belong to the American Communist party. Seeing that the USA were strongly anti-communist, the Russians put more money and energy to their nuclear and space programs. And had a cold relationship with the USA.
