Yes! They can be, you can always get a monologue that can lead up to a song, if it is one of those Hip-hop or rock songs, chances are that they wont have a small monologue before the singing part. You could also improvise and then lead it up to the song. If the song tells a story, then SURE it can be considered a monologue, just make sure you don't sing it if you want it to be a monologue and not a song.

The lyrics of a song speak of a story and I would think it could be considered in a certain way as a monologue. I belong to a group who perform for the elderly and when I do a song for them, I feel as if I am telling them a story...

It depends who you're auditioning for. If it's a high school production, community theatre, or children's show, there should be no problem, as long as it displays your ability to create a character, and it can be spoken clearly without sounding too sing-song. For a college or professional production, I recommend going with something written to be performed on the stage. There's nothing WRONG with using a song for an audition, but on the more advanced level it looks amateurish and unpolished. Whatever you choose, remember your primary criterion is whether it is the best possible choice to spotlight your ability to create a character.

Absolutely! I used Reba McEntire's "She Thinks His Name Was John" for a directing project and it turned out great. Country soungs especially tend to tell a story.

Absolutely. Choose one that rhymes though, and it sounds like when delivered as spoken word. Choose your song carefully.
