I have no idea.

But if it is and it's running on a Microsoft product, we're all screwed.

Depends what alien civilization you speak of, there are a couple of them. Virtual reality program is a little limited for that question, there is nothing virtual about this, it's a reality program, even program isn't the right word. I like to think of it as a testing ground for the soul purpose of self recognition. I feel fine being a pawn, when your sacrificed you no longer have to play the game like all the other pieces, free of it all. Self awareness is achieved when ever you think you did it, other than that never. If your a pawn then your being played in chess, there are two players to a chess game. Who is your player mr. pawn??? Your not self aware untill you know that.

and is that alien civilisation only another virtual reality program? Managed by still another alien civilisation, itself also another virtual reality program?

It's funny when people believe they "solve it" by saying "aliens created life on Earth", or "we are only units in a simulation program run by aliens" - this resolves nothing, it just goes up one level, without saying how the previous level got there.

Go and read Descartes, the 17th century mathematician and philosopher, who said that everything could be doubted, including our own senses, so that the only thing we could be sure of, at best, was that we were "thinking beings".

I wish it were! No tension, no responsibility - there is that someone else better than us who can control us properly to our rightful destiny. Indeed would be a great relief if it were to be so!!
But then we would feel even less important than animals - perhaps we would revolt, even though it may take us to a worse situation. No, we do not like to be humble servants, we want to be masters - even though may be the blundering one.

The universe is the @ symbol on a multiversal keyboard. You'd need a very powerful microscope to see it, though.
