They do what they've done for years now LOSE IT. Royal M ail has been taken over by a bunch of thieving b**tards, they only deliver the junk mail and thieve the rest. Although the posties in my neck of the woods are good guys. It's London that's bad. Sorry for going on , but I've had a few items of mail go missing, and I won't tell you about trying to make a compensation claim.

i worked 4 the Royal Mail many many moons ago.
c it's like this.
any letter without a return address is sent 2 the Dead-Letter office.
it's opened & if a return address is supplied, it is Returned 2 Sender.
no return address?
it sits in the Dead-letter office 4 at least 2-5 years, depending on the nature of the letter.
after that it's recycled.
u'd b surprised the things people will send without a return address.
money & valuables etc is either auctioned or sold off & the proceeds sent 2 one of HRH favourite charities.
why hers?
because when u post that letter/parcel etc, it is the property of the Queen until it reaches the addressee.

i did like my job & miss the sorting office pranks,
but no i don't miss getting up at 4 AM!

I believe those that have an address on the back, or return address on the front are genuinely sent back. As for those that dont like personal letters, the royal mail have been known to open it to see address of who wrote it. I had one like that returned to me after it went to the wrong address.

My Dad is a postman,

If there is no return address on the envelope then they have to open the mail, to get the address.
