When I start my computer the System 32 tray appears. I close the folder down and the booting process continues as normal. I am running Windows XP (Home edition) on my laptop. System restores will not resolve the problem. The virus appears to have been written into the registry. Various registry editing software has not resolved the problem. Does anybody have explicit instructions on removing this virus. I am not particularly expert on registry entries .........

By the way, I am running McAfee Security Centre which is automatically updated. I am not currently accessing Yahoo answers via the 'infected' laptop.

Hi there,

One of the first programs I would try to help with this infection is Prevx1. This has recently been reported as having the strongest protection and removal capabilities of all security programs currently available, so would probably be the best place to start.

They currently offer a free trial which will scan your PC and remove this and any other infections free of charge.

Ok goto start, run, and then type regedit, once the registry comes up you go to the find box and type in the name of the process running under system 32. then do a search for that and keep hitting find next under regedit till you remove all the files. Word of caution make sure you read the thread in regedit before you delete to assure you dont remove a windows file or such.

another thing to think about, is that the reason your system32 is popping up is becuase a program is trying to do something and its not completing, go through your add/remove programs under control panel and remove all programs that you know are no good or that you dont use, reboot and see if that system 32 still comes up.

I would then run adaware and remove all the progz that are on your system, how do i know they are there? because for one your on yahoo...lol. Anyways just remove all the ad stuff, reboot and see if the system 32 is gone.

It might not be a virus. Try going to Microsoft's website, there's a support section. There's also an excellent forum at
http://www.xpforum.co.uk/forums/index.php
and its well worth joining.

Just in case it is a virus, try running your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode.
To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware

You can install all three of these, they won't conflict, and they're all free for home use.

Hmmmm Don't download Spy Sweeper. It'll create new problems as it did me. I had more problems with that than the initial virus.

I have Zone Alarm Security Suite after trying McAfee and Norton. I find I can set my firewall as low or high as I please and the virus/trojan scans are great and if they can't clean it they quarantine. I download things all the time and never have problems since Zone Alarm.

try to run "msconfig" and look for the suspicious file(system 32) and delete it.. Oh, delete it in the startup menu in the msconfig window.
