21st century an 'Age of Communication' is the growing complexity and centrality of communication in all human endeavors as never before. This communication revolution- heralded by different technologies- has left no aspect of individual and social life untouched. From family dynamics to cultural milieu, from educational requirements to corporate competitions, from political strategies to developmental planning...almost every field now requires more and more communication inputs and insights at every stage. Naturally, this situation necessitates the inclusion of communication as a special discipline in the regular academic programs so that a systematic flow of such communication inputs and trained manpower is maintained.
University of Pune, foreseeing such needs established Department of Communication Studies in July 1990. University of Pune was one of the first universities in India to recognize that academic training in Communication means much more than mass communication in general and journalism in particular. The Department was therefore, named as 'Department of Communication Studies'. The name and the course are thus in tune with the trend in the academics as well as in the industry.
Department has been successfully running a two years full time Masters Course in Communication Studies (M.Cm.S.) since its inception. While expanding the scope of academic training beyond journalism, Department has identified Video Production and Media Research as its strength areas. Over the years, the course has also incorporated emerging areas in the field mass communication while keeping our strength areas in focus.
This constant endeavor to tune in to the demands of the ever-changing media industry and maintain high academic standards has earned the Department its reputation as one of the best courses in the field of Media and Mass Communication in the India. University of Pune has been given the highest Five Star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC) for its overall performance. It has also been identified as 'Potential for Excellence' by University Grants Commission (UGC)- the apex body for higher education in India. Department of Communication Studies upholds this legacy of University in letter and spirit. The bright career path our alumni have been following for the last thirteen years in different fields of media and communication is just one testimony of this legacy.

Objectives and Scope:
Keeping in focus the academic standards set by the University and the requirements of the media industry, Department has identified following objectives:
. To advance the academic discipline of Communication Studies through teaching, research and practical exercises.
. To impart sound academic knowledge and practical skills required for various mass media and forms of communication.
. To train the students to produce communication packages for different mass media and to produce communicators who can aid in education and development.
. To inculcate in students a broader orientation of the role of communication in society and culture through different theories and research project.
Department strives to achieve these objectives through every activity it undertakes- be it development and execution of curricula, evaluation of students, extension work or co-curricular activities. The final goal of the Department is to produce 'Thinking Communicators'.
The Masters Program is designed while keeping these objectives in mind. It seeks to impart practical skills and in-depth insights about the process of communication with special emphasis on mass communication. The course offers two specializations- Media Research (MR) and Video Production (VP). Ours is one of the very few Departments the country which offers a complete specialization in Media Research. The specializations, which come into effect during the second year, provide opportunities to students for independent and exciting exploration into their areas of interest through a research dissertation on media related topics or a creative video production project.
The rigorous training and a sound social and professional orientation make this course a take off point for a wide range of careers in television and film production, advertisement research and planning, broadcast journalism, corporate communication, content development, media research, education, human resource development, social work, academics and allied professions. With growing need for communication related inputs in a variety of fields, the scope for communication professionals is only increasing. Department attempts to incorporate many of these fields into its fold by ways of academic modules, practical sessions, seminars and workshops.
