Tell him the band has split, then reform, maybe with a different name.

Just be honest. If he's a friend of yours he'll understand. Chances are he might even feel the same way, and he might know deep down he's not pulling his weight. Go for a drink, give him an ultimatum (unless you've done that already). If you're in the band to "make it" you don't really have time to deal with people like that. And if you're just in the band to have fun.....what's the harm in playing a few coversongs now and then?

Just tell him that you all seem to want different things and because of that the band isn't moving forward. Make sure all the band members back you up. Don't worry about hurting his feelings, if you sack him he might be able to find a band that want to do the same things as him, so see it as doing him a favour

Have a meeting and tell him honestly what you think and that you and the other band members are going another direction...be honest and sincere without getting into personalities or abilities. Keep it professional and low key..

Tell him the band is going in a different direction to the one he wants and you think it would be only fair to let him follow his interests without the other band members holding him back!

Tell him the truth and maybe he'll start writing some of his own material, or find a covers band for him to join and he'll leave you himself.. maybe you know some other people who would be into what he's doing?

well you could start to pretend to be busy so you get out of practices then the rest of you practice at other places, and as for gigs you can not take them if you do not practice and the rest of you can book gigs when he is not around. it is sneaky , underhanded and could take a while, or you could just be straight forward and say that you guys are not getting along well and think it be better to split from the band for a while

Have a meeting in the pub, tell him the band are splitting up and then leave. Then start up a "new" band (different name) with the other guy.
