I do resistance exercises with dumbbells that are specially made for use in the pool. They are made of float material, and if you can stabilize yourself to where your arms and shoulders are underwater, you can do several good arm workout exercises just like in a weight room. The advantage is that you don't have gravity working against you, and your back doesn't have to absorb as much strain. They are actually physical therapy exercises.
I have seen others make extensive use of these in water aerobics, but I do not know those techniques. A local physical therapist or health club staff might be able to help you there. Of course, swimming is the best aerobic exercise--breast stroke, crawl, using a kickboard, on your back, back stroke, or even walking across the pool (harder to do than you'd think!). The main thing is to keep moving to maintain aerobic conditions for your body.
