No, carbon in the filter will not stop pH buffers from working. A pH buffer stops the pH from changing, it doesn't lower it. Maybe that is your problem. Are you sure it is a buffer? There is a chemical called "pH Down" that works, but why do it with chemicals. Peat moss is the best way to safely lower the pH.

Put a ball of peat moss (the Michigan variety is best) in the filter so the water will circulate around it. Change the peat moss every week without fail. Live plants also will lower the pH. I have angels and apistogramma and without using peat or chemicals, the water is acidic enough for them to thrive. The angels have spawned three times. The apistos are new.

Both angels and discus come from the same general area in south America so the water parameters are basically the same for both. Neons like soft water too.

carbon is neutral and therefore should not affect any ph lowering products that you use, the carbon is there not to filter as such, but to aid in the removal of nitrates in the water naturally produced by the fish. it would also help to test the water from you tap so you know if changing water is having an effect. i think it is possible in the uk to get purified water for fish tanks, although i have always wondered how it is delivered and how you get it to the right temperature for your tank. i would suggest that conditions in your tank are very good as the fish would not lay eggs otherwise, certainly not 6 times at any rate.

I've read they use put peatmoss in the filter to turn the water acidic.. Or dried oak leaves in the tank.

Try carbon, ammonite, peat moss, filter floss etc. they can be found at most fish stores.

It shouldn't affect that no, but carbon filters aren't all that efficient.

All you need to do is try to get the ph to go down w/o the filter running. Also when the ph goes down change the filter insides.
