Sometimes, Cassie, there's simply not anything to "get", as Holden discovered.

Read it when you are 30.

Some of the things they assign to kids fly right over their head. We read Faulkner. Think any of us got HIM? But years after school, I went back and read a half dozen of his books on my own. I saw the genius of it. I wished I could tell a story, capture a moment or an emotion, the way he did.

Right now Catcher is an assigned reading burden. I get that part. But it's a good book. Trust us. Some day you may get it.

Thought it was okay and could relate to quite a lot of it! its about the feeling of rebellion and disillusionment that teenagers and young people have with authority and the rest of the world!

Probably will not understand it if you've never felt the same way!

Its the tale of a sarcastic disillusioned young man, who goes through life saying I don't care to everything. Like most people who say they don't care, he really does care. Near the end of the novel, he comes to the realization that he does care about life and where he is going. In fact he cares very deeply.

I read it about 8 years ago as I heard it was a classic, but no I didn't really get it either! Would put me off anyhing else by Sallinger to be honest.

I read it quite recently. I must say it wasn't as profound or thought-provoking as I'd expected, but then again I often feel I miss the point of these things!

I get it just fine, but it was one of the most boring pieces of literature I have ever read. I struggled through the entire thing.

It is impossible to get, neither does the author or the main character

you're not meant to "get" a book - it's not a maths quiz. it's a novel. you're meant to relate it to it emotionally and intellectually. if you don't, it either means that it doesn't appeal to you, which is fair enough, or that you don't have the necessary instruments to relate to it. very simple.

Don't worry, it's not a real novel, just a tool for activating 'Manchurian Candidates'.
