A book about magic. I wonder where you got that idea?
Write a book for children but one some adults would enjoy ,also. The character that is magical is a 3 month old kitten. He was saved from being killed by a farmer, because he can read people's minds. He came to live with a family that had an autistic child. Just an idea.
Use a different pet if you don't like cats. I think cats are naturally magical. That may be just me. Happy writing!

well if it was about magic
Then i would make its a children book
Maybe the story about a magic Horse
and the lots of magic tricks he played on his friends
Why where did the silly horse Go ?
Said SAM the cat to Billy the dog
I am not sure said Billy shaking his head and looking all around
he was here a minute ago
If you what to hear the end you will have to wait for the book

learn some magic tricks and work out a plot with the main character as the magician

You should have no idea at all. I am sorry for being too bold to say this but belief in magic really in contrary with our religion (depend on what religion you are.) Once you created one book about it, surely you will influence lots of people (your readers of course) in which will go against their religion. In other words ( I hope you don't mind if I say this) you have misled them into other types of belief.
Then of course, due to this fact, you have committed sins which in the end will cause you to suffer.
Be that as it may, it all depend on you. Your decision and your choice is in your hand.

I guess a book so convincing in its fantasy, that people believe it could really happen. Lots of references to real people saying something like "Einstien was a wizard" or "Hitler was a werewolf"
