Hi, I just graduated this summer and used the library for the same thing. Its really really easy. You can go to the website www.bl.com and then search for the books that you want and order them before you get there so that they are behind the counter waiting for you. Its sensible to do this because the books can take up to three days to arrive - some of the books are stored in Boston Spa which is near Leeds. Most of them however take 40 minutes and when you order them from the library a light on your desk lights up so you don't have to keep checking. They also have a good system whereby if someone else has your book they will go and ask if you can borrow it too - they always know what desk number you are sitting at. If a member of staff has the book, it is policy that the book is returned immediately and issued to you. You can keep up to 6 books behind the counter for yourself in one go, more if they are skinny and the librarian is alright.

Before you can do this though you will need to get a library card, just bring a passport or driving license and a utility bill as proof of address. They will give you a photocard. If you lose this its £5 to get a new one. You have to show this card every time you enter a reading room.

The library is really easy to find your way around. They will give you a map when you first get there- it has cafes which are very expensive, but lockers so you could bring some lunch.

I had a great time writing my dissertation there - met loads of cool people and we all supported each other - regular coffee breaks - pizza express just across the road for lunch.

One major tip though - if you are using a laptop, make sure that you get there before 11 - pref 10 during the holidays, or you will not be able to find a free plug until about 4pm.

Good luck. Hope you enjoy writing your dissertation as much as I did.
