Does anyone know how to get grease stains out of clothing? I've tried hot washes, pre soaking, pre washing and vanish and it's on one of my favourite tops!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Rub in some washing powder with a little water in to the stain then let it go dry before you wash it the same day. It works where washing up liquid fails.
You have to be careful if you are doing this to very dark clothes not to leave it on dry for too long as it can take the colour off too. Light colours will be OK.

soak the grease strains with Dawn dishwashing detergent. Cover the stains with a copious amount and let sit for two days, then launder as normal. If the tops are white, you might soak in a bucket of bleachy water for 24 hours - about 4 ounces per gallon. If that doesn't do it - it's permanent.

if it's grease from a car, ie, engine oil, brake fluid you pretty much have no hope. if it is something like cooking oil, ie veggie oil, olive oil, i usually spray preen oxyaction and let it sit for about 10 - 15 Min's then soak in luke warm water with nappy san for at least 2 hours, then wash per instructions.
PS. if you have put it through a HOT wash to start with i guarantee it's not going to come out completely, the stain has set!

I have two sources for grease stains-
1)Scrape away as much as possible with a spoon. Place stain on a clean, white cotton rag. Spray with WD-40 (available at hardware stores), and rub from the top with another clean rag. Flip over and spray stain from other side. Continue to flip, spray, rub and move to a clean area of the rag until the stain is removed. Treat the edges of the WD-40 circle the same way to remove as much migrated material as possible. Soak in an enzyme pre-soak and then launder as usual. Drip dry and evaluate before putting in dryer.
Another method is to use a mechanics hand cleaner (available at auto parts stores), gently rubbing it into the stain with a tooth brush. Follow with an enzyme pre-soak and then launder as usual. Drip dry and evaluate before putting in dryer.
For dry clean materials, treat with WD-40 as above, and take to the dry cleaners. http://www.srfabrics.com/care/stain.htm

2)Place stain face down on clean white (no print) paper towels. Apply cleaning fluid to the back of the stain. replace paper towels as necessary to soak up the residue. Let dry, rinse, and launder using hottest water considered safe for the fabric (book: Cleaning Plain & Simple)

The trick is to treat the stain before it's washed. It seems that once you have washed it, it is almost impossible to shift the grease. If your top is dry cleanable, I would recommend taking it to a good dry cleaners and asking if they can do anything with it.

Using a grease release, or cleaner, like hand cleaner in the auto motive section of your dept store may help. If the blouse is already unwearable, trying can't hurt. Whatever you do, never dry items with stains you want to try to get out, as it sets it.

Add a cup of vinegar to the wash. That usually works. You may have already "set" the stain though by washing it in hot water.

use a dishwashing detergent that says "CUTS GREASE" on the lable. It works on anything. rub the detergent right on the stain and work it in afor a few minutes, then let it set for about 5 more minutes. then wash regularly.
