i got hit on the head pretty hard. and my brain was slightly sore until i went to sleep. How much damage can it do? as a student this is important to me. will it affect my thinking skills or just my memory? can a damage this big recover? if so, how long would it take?

You need to go to the emergency room. You may have a concussion or worse. My mother in law fell in her garage a couple years ago and ended up wtih water on the brain! Not a good thing.

If there was no loss of consciousness, no vomiting, no eye problems, etc., you probably just "bruised" your brain and will be fine.
However, if you start experiencing headaches, fuzzy thinking, vomiting, lethargy, dizziness...you better see a doctor. There is the potential for a slow leak of blood between the brain and the inside of the skull (subdural hematoma) which is very dangerous. I'd suggest you have someone around to watch you for the first day or two after the accident to monitor your behavior.

If you didn't vomit, and/or lose consciousness or feel really sleepy afterwards, or had blurred vision, you're fine.
If you felt really sleepy or even kind of "fell asleep" afterwards, then y6ou've had a concussion and need to be seen, even if you feel better.
If none of the above happened and the only thing is sore head, then you' have nothing to worry about. If you don't feel like yourself get seen.

Naturally it will have killed some of your brain....
Exactly how much damage depends on how hard you were hit.
If it was a punch to the head then not much.
If it was a brick to the head then it could leave you a bit out of it.
If it was a car to the head then you're f**ked.
Its difficult to give you an answer without some kind of quantified measure of how much damage you sustained... But it shouldn't be all that bad... You can to some extent counter such cell death by exercising your brain.... forcing it to keep working... keeping it active...
Think about abstract things... mathematical, scientific, philosophical.... anything like that will do provided you're challenging yourself mentally...

have you vomited? you are probably ok, but when one is hit in the hard they should get a cat scan. there could be swelling, or bleeding or a cracked skull, anything!!!!! It is nothing to mess around with.
