It takes however long it takes.
Many caregivers do prefer to see mom deliver the baby within 24 hours of the water breaking, so if she doesn't get the baby out on her own within 24 hours they will recommend a c/s. (Some less invasive caregivers - usually midwives - might wait 48 hours as long as mom and baby are doing well and vaginal exams are kept to a minimum.)
*Personally* my water never broke until LATE in labor. My first was born about 1.5 hours after my water broke, my second was born 12 mins after my water broke and my third was born a couple of minutes later.

Wow, that depends! Was she already having contractions when it broke? My mid-wife was the one who broke my water to try and help the baby come out faster, but it was still 2 hrs after before she was ready. Some babies are born just after, other women can go several days inbetween the time their water breaks and the baby is born. It usually is a sign of immediate labor although not always - so have the phone near by for the call from the hospital!

That is a question that has no definately answer. All births are different. The water breaking means you have to get to the hospital immediately but it could still take some time for the baby to come out.

O.K. I'll tell you my story. I went into labor at 2:30 a.m. and I was 4 cm at 11:00 a.m. They gave me an epidural and and then broke my water. They told my family "you have a couple hours go get you something to eat and come back" well my husband and mom did not even make it to the elevators and they paged them to come back i had dialated to 10 cm and fully efaced in about 1 minute Ipushed her out within 2 min after my waater was broke. I guess you could say sometimes it doesn''t take very long.

Contractions should start within the hour, but labor itself can last 12-24 hours, especially if it is first child. It is different for every person, there really is no way to know. After my water broke with my first child is was 11 hours and the same for my second child. 11 hours is actually pretty low. The average is 14-16 hours.

Hi, My water broke and then I had contractions 3 minutes apart and baby was born in less then 3 hours from the time it broke. It depends on the person and the pregnancy. Good luck. I do advice get to the hospital tho since infection can set in if its to long before labor begins.

She will probably deliver within 24 hours. They don't want you to go over that length of time. My water broke at 7:30 am and my son was born at 8:53 pm that night by c-section. He was just too big to go through the birth canal.

Different for everyone. (Whether it's her first baby can also have some bearing on this as they normally take longer to make their grand entrance!)
Mine took 10 hours from the time my water broke, (12 hours from start to finish) but only because it ended as an emergency c-section or it would've been longer.
Good luck to your cousin and congrats to your whole family!

It REALLY varies, I'd have her call the triage at the hospital she will be delivering at. They may want her to come in asap. I think she's may be at risk after the water breaks. They had to break mine for me, but my mom waited several hours before calling, and they got upset with her.
If you're just wondering for you're own curiosity, It could be an hour to a couple days. If she's having steady contractions 5 min apart, then it could very well be today!
