was this really for their benefit ?

watching an old film with a missionary and the hero in some gold rush crazy town and the missionary says " i came here to help the indians but i reckon its the white man that needs the help". For me this sums up how i feel when white men (leaders of the Free World -sic ) goes into a country and culture they don't understand (and in some cases can't spell ) and turns it upside down and then claims it was all for their benefit. so my question is are these countries better off WITH or WITHOUT our meddling ?

Everyone should fend for themself! Seriously though, I do believe most places would be better off without the meddling, but that isn't how all the economics and politics of the world work. There are so many ties to so many different things involving different countries that it's hard for them to just "mind their own business". That said, just think of how introducing new species can effect ecosystems that weren't meant to have them, it can be very disasterous, wiping out other forms of life. Sooooooooo.....

The reason they come is to convert the natives to their religion to satisfy their own spirtiual needs. The best example of where this has been disatrous is in Africa. Christian Missionaries have been offering aid for 100s of years unfortunately to get the aid you have to follow their beliefs. In christanity that means condoms are not allowed and as christian charites are the main ones out there giving aid it is virtually impossible to get condoms out to North Africa. Of course people are still having sex and This has caused the aids virus to spread like wild fire, it is likely that in less than fifty years the aids virus will have wiped out a large majority if not virtually all the african population.

Similarly in South American Countries where catholism is the majority religion the same reason why you have 1000s of orphans living on the streets some governments send out hit squads to keep the numbers down.

Oxfam and Unesco are great provided they dont use christian missionaries (they do sometimes though)Think carefully before you put money in the little christian aid envelopes you get posted through your door

We are not the past and I wish everyone would just stop getting bent out of shape on what history has done. Yes , I will agree that watching some of those old movies on history etc. offend me as a white person. That's why the present can change that but everyone needs to work together. I am engaged to a native American and I work for them. They give their employees the best medical benifits etc. Plus the tribe I work for also gives the community and goverment a lot of money to help all kinds of people. They don't live in the past , they live for the present and future. Why can't we all? The past is the past that no body is proud of, but we can change it!

The white man, or European, has never gone anywhere for the benefit of others, the Spanish did not go to the America's to spread religion, or to educate in any way, they went looking for riches, and wiped out a whole civilisation, the same with us Brit's we are no better, or the Portuguese, French, Dutch, and so on and on, self gain, no other reason.

I really do understand where you are coming from especially since along with god they introduced diseases and often disparity. my only but is that it was all done with good intent no one wanted to harm these people only help them on the other hand some of the untouched cultures have decided to rise up against the free world today.

it depends on the reason for interfering in the first instance and if the reason has no substance then my answer is not to interfere
