There are 24 hours in a day.
There are 1440 minutes in a day.
There are 86,400 seconds in a day.

Now for the tricky part. The above figures are what is known as a calendar day. Below are more exact figures known as a sideral day.

It takes the earth 23 hours 56 minutes to rotate on axis.
So if you extend this out over a year it works out to be about 365 days and 5 hours for the earth to rotate around the sun. This is where leap seconds, minutes, days and years come about. It is the adjustment of the clock to fit with the actual universe. Leap day (February 29) every 4 years is thrown in to account for the extra 5+ hours in the orbit. New Years Day is usually picked for extra minutes or seconds.

If we did not have a method of keeping fairly perfect time, life as you know it today would not be the same. Computers would not run properly. Seasons would walk around the calendar every millenia or so.
