It depends on the battery technology. Most now are lithium ion. These don't suffer from the memory effect where the life is shortened if you don't fully discharge (this was a problem for NiCd)

It depends upon the battery . They best way to keep your battery is to have it completely drained/ dead before recharging fully. If you keep charging the battery when a bar is gone, then it will eventually not keep a good charge. Your battery will last 2-4 yrs dependind upon how you charge it.
