I'm trying to come up with a way to build a fireless bonfire. We having a Boy Scout Halloween bash and our area is currently under a "burn ban". Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You could try using red, orange, and yellow streamers or strips cut from rolls of transparent film with the same colors. Make the strips wavy with pointed or forked ends to look like individual flames. Attach these to one side of a round or box fan, then turn the fan on it's side (flames up). Make sure there is room for airflow under the fan and the holes in the fan's screen should be small to prevent kid's fingers and the flame strips from entering the fan. You could put a red, orange or yellow light that stays cool to the touch in a cone-shaped reflector lamp. Put it under the fan and point it up so it shines through the "flames." They also have novelty lamps that have transparent plastic wheels with different colors that rotate over the bulb to change the color of the light. If you use one with fiery colors minus the cover, it'll give you a great effect. Plus the bulbs are designed to stay cool so they won't melt the plastic wheel. Examples are shown in the links below. I don't necessarily recommend buying from the companies in the links, you can probably buy the lamps at a local store. Fake or real logs around the outside to cover up the sides of the fan (and maybe even a couple on "top" of the fan) will make it look more realistic (just make sure there's airflow). Plug in the fan and light after everything is done and turn them on. You should test it ahead of time to see if it works right, looks good, and is safe. Make sure the light does not get hot! Also, don't try around sandy or dusty areas or you'll blow the stuff all over the place. I haven't actually done this myself, but I've seen fake fires for sale that are basically made this way.

I am a Cubmaster in Upper Michigan, Pack 526 Hiawathaland Council. You actually have two options, the first, which probably wont work because it is difficult to move parents enmasse, is to change the location of your bonfire.

The second, and more viable option, is to approach your City Manager, and Mayor, IN YOUR UNIFORM, and request a waiver. most City and County Govornments will bend over backwards to support all scouting organizations. No politition wants to be known as the person who said "No!" to Cub, Boy, or Girl Scouts...at least not 3 days before an election.

Another boring Fox news question. To answer I will say this. Fox news has already convinced the American people that they are legit. Their ratings are higher then all other cable news networks combined. They have an audience that consists of not only republicans but independents and fair-minded democrats. It is only the far loony left that wishes to silence Fox news and deny Americans their right to a free press. Fortunately Fox news is going no where and will continue to dominate the ratings game for years to come. All I can say to you is to deal with it.

Take and get an outdoor light bulb red and one orange (easy to find this time of year and also at your local home depot may hve them, you could also substitute a yellow bug light for the orange one and it would have dual purpose) and put them in two small lamps. get a small fan and point it upwards, get some red/organe/yellow crape paper from your local party store. make a teepee out of some large logs over the lamps and fan. attach the crape paper to the logs, when you turn the fan on, it will blow the crape paper up and with the lights under neath it will give the effect of flames on a fire.

good luck hope this helps.

If you are out of time, but you have a bit of budget left, you can usually find a "Witches cauldron" at a nearby store that carries halloween stuff. I've used my cauldrons on stage as fires in pot bellied stoves and Indian campfires. There simular of the make it yourself a couple answers up, but everything is already put together.

Don't build a bonfire. Handout little lighters to all of the boys, to roast their marshmallows over.
