how to get rid of ants in the house? tried baby powder but av an alternative route?

Baby powder is no use, nor is salt. A solution of borax (boracic acid) and sugar is what you want. You can buy it as Nippon (in the UK) or there are several other names for the same thing. You can either get a powder or a liquid. It is fatal to ants, harmless to children and pets. Ask at your local hardware store, chemist/druggist or supermarket.

They take it and carry it back to the nest. It will take a day or so before the nest is killed.

Try checking around where the ants are coming from. Many times a leaky pipe will provide a support system for ants to drink from.
