i am in plaster at the moment(this is my 6th week in plaster) for a broken metatarsal and each time i go to the hospital i have to have my foot re-X-rayed, it has been X-rayed 4 times so far and i am due to have it X-rayed again in a weeks time, mind you the last time i went the Doc i saw couldn't read an X-ray so i think i would have been better going to the vets instead!!!!!!!!!!

The most important thing is whether your foot is okay when the
plaster was removed from it.
During the 7 weeks in the plaster cast, your broken foot has
healed and if you can walk easily without pain, there's no need
for a second X-ray, lest you've to pay more.
Don't worry unnecessary - it's probably healed already.

You didn't get an x-ray as at that point it would have given them no further information. If your general health was good it would have healed or been almost completely healed. There were other things to think of like was it worth exposing you to radiation for something they already knew was happening or happened. X-rays are not safe as they impart energy into the tissues as they pass through them. This can cause cellular changes which are MOST of the time harmless. X-rays produce images by attenuation os the beam (stopping it). The bone is the most dense material so attenuates the beam the most. The soft tissue does it to a lesser degree and shows up as grey-scale. It can cause somatic changes in the cell DNA that can lead to such things as cancers. So that is why X-rays are used sparingly, for your safety and to get information when it will make a difference to your treatment.

This is a clinical call. If you walked alright and had no foot pain you had no reason to have an X-ray. If you still had a lot of pain and walked with a limp - that would have told them that you did not heal correctly. It sound like you did not need an X-ray. The additional radiation will do you no good anyways.

Hi well no not always you dont need another x-ray,consultants and Drs know when you fracture will be healed and how long its only when you have a badly displaced fracture or had a operation you need regular x-rays to make sure the fracture is healing in the right allignment and new growth off bone is healing over the fracture site.If your having problems now thou with the same leg go bck to your gp and he will send you for a x-ray or refer you to the orthopaedic team.Good Luck

When I broke my arm about four years ago, I have my plaster on for about three weeks and they didn't xray it after they took my plaster off and I'm fine. Don't worry about it.

have you only just thought of asking , your a bit late, what if you were told yes, it would be to late to do nothing about it now, no you dont need an x ray after the plaster comes off.

Not really........ being in plaster for 7-weeks is plenty of time for the body to repair a simple fracture.

probably should have, to make sure that the broken bones healed properly. they must have had a lot of faith in the people who casted your foot. if the same people removed the cast, they must have been happy with how they set and plastered it.

depends if it were a hair line fracture or a major break. Also depends what city ur in and what hospital ur in to. I think (dont quote me on this one) they will say that if u had a hair line fracture. If not, and u know it was a major break, go back to the A&E dept and demand a X-ray. Eplain ur situation to them, they should comply.

hope this helps
