In France (but we are strange and different...) a man has to down one knee to give you a promise ring and not for the weeding ring because he asks you to become his wife at the moment he gives you the promise ring and the wedding ring is given in church.

What the hell is a "Promise Ring"? Promise to do what? If a guy is "promising" he is going to marry you, then why not go ahead and get the engagement ring? If he is "promising" to love, honor, and cherish you til the next hot thing rolls by...then what's the point? Any girl who accepts a promise ring is pretty much grasping at straws anyway, dontcha think?

when my bf gave me a "promise ring", he didn;t knee down. He just slided it into my finger. Need not be so elaborate and knee down for promise ring.

Only when proposing marriage does the man get down on one knee, and even that isn't something he has to do.

kneeling, offering a ring is a romantic and politeness way of demonstrating his undying love. a promise ring is a token of respect to his love one. and the lady must be proud of, that someone gave special attention and offer the sanctity of his love.
