I have Windows XP Professional.

Do this.

Right click the folder.
Choose "properties".
Open the tab "sharing"
Check "Do not share this folder"
Then press "Apply"
Open the tab "General"
Click on the button "Advanced"
Check "Encrypt contents to secure data"
Click "O.K"
Then click on "Apply"

Now the folder can only acessible from your User-name.

Give password to your User-Account.

Hi...
There are many freeware tools available on the internet like the Folder Guard etc. in which you can put your files and password protect the folder itself to stop accessing the files.

Otherwise you can search for encrypting and decrypting tools so that the desired file can be encrypted for safe storage and then decrypted for future use.

Download dirLock 1.4 from www.download.com.It is free.I would advise you to go through the other lockers available for free on that website,read the user reviews,just to be sure you are downloading the best.Folder lock is really nice,but you can only use it for a few times and then pay for it..Good luck.

Right click the folder and click sharing and security. And tick make this folder private and it will prompt you to add a password.

I keep no important files on my computer. They are all in my external drive and I don't connect my external drive to my computer when not using

you cannot protect each and every file ,jus put it in a folder and follow the above solutions...
