if u r a software developer u will most likely be working with windows app more often than Apple apps so Apples arent for u unless u r willing to pay a premium and buy one of their Intel based notebooks. As far as the entry level prgramming goes, u can get a basic notebook that goes something like Core Duo 2050 (if u r lucky) or Dothan, 512mb, 40GB, CDRW/DVD and that will cost u anywhere between $400-600 depending on how good a deal u land. If you want to go cheaper, get an AMD notebook and the min. price can go down another $50 (we are talking brand new here).

Any IBM for UDB.
Any Dell or HP/Compaq, P4, minimum 2GHz, 256MB, 30GB, CDRW/DVD, optional FD WiFi, is quite enough for upgrade to W2K, .Net Studio, SQL server, ORC Linux, Photoshop. Higher resolution LCD, from 1024+ x768 pixels, is best bet for photo workshop, 2.4 GHz for movie studio only. HDD must not too old.
Maybe no-sale-fee Yahoo or Ebid auction is better deal.

Apple Powerbook G4 - powerful, useful, beautiful and you don't have to use windows. But don't put it on your lap or it'll fry your genitals! They're calling them portable computers these days because they get so hot they can be bad for you!

Depends what you are looking for, right?
IBM is good quality, but quite expensive.
Dell is OK and reasonably cheap.
Acer is also OK, consumer-grade hardware and good price.
I don't know about other brands.
