Wilbur Smith is good (but his South African books were better) but have you looked at any of Peter Danielson's books? One is Vengeance of the Lion and there is a whole series, dealing with Egypt. If you go to Yahoo search and enter 'Ancient Egypt in Fiction' you will find a site that gives an alphabetical listing of the hundreds of authors who have written fiction based in ancient Egypt. It's broken into categories so you can choose from children's literature or various other modes. It was a fascinating time period, wasn't it? There is also a book about Ahkneton, who was the first to worship Ra as the sun god and changed the site of Egypt's capital. When he died (suspiciously, and at a young age) his brother had his name removed from temple plinthes and moved the capital back again. It was a great book, but I can't remember the title or the author. Shame on me!

Maybe the "Thief and the dogs".
It is written by Naguib Mahfouz and its background is Egypt in the sixties of the last century.
It is filled with more than romance . It is a depiction of the political life in Egypt at that time , on a second thought , No , don't read it . I would suggest anything by Naguib Mahfouz though.
Just to correct some information , Naguib Mahfouz did win a Noble in 1988. He died 2 months ago.

Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively is the only love story set in Egypt I can recall off hand; must be others by Lawrence Durrell etc.
Have a look here

Read the Alexandria Quartet by Laurence Durrell. The titles are Justine, Mountolive, Balthazar and Clea. But there's far more to them than romance, so be prepared to exercise the brain as well as the heart!

I read a strange book of a twisted love story, part of it is set in Egypt. If you like reading stories that are really wacky but still love stories, try 'Still Life With Woodpecker' by Tom Robbins. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's one of my favorite books.

Try "the red tent" by Anita Diamont. Wonderful love story set in ancient Canaan and Egypt. It will make you cry, feel wonderful, and want to call your mother. Truly spectacular.
