On March 16, 2006, the Dixie Chicks released the single "Not Ready to Make Nice" in advance of their upcoming album. Written by all three Chicks alongside Dan Wilson, it directly addressed the political controversy that had surrounded the group for the past three years:

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and I don’t have time to go 'round and 'round and 'round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

and, in criticism of the death threats the women (particularly Maines) received,

It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge that they’d write me a letter sayin’ that I better shut up and sing or my life will be over

In a press release, Robison said, "The stakes were definitely higher on that song. We knew it was special because it was so autobiographical, and we had to get it right. And once we had that song done, it freed us up to do the rest of the album without that burden."

This song was the Chicks' response to the reaction from their comment that they were ashamed President Bush is from Texas (he's not, but why let the facts get in the way...).
While on tour in the UK, Natalie Maines made a comment that she was ashamed that George W. Bush was from Texas, and the Country Music community in the U.S. reacted angrily. Many stations stopped playing the Chicks' music, and some even suggested that in the old days the girls would have been tried for treason. The band endured a lot of hostility and negative publicity, and the song is about their feelings on the whole issue.
Ironically, some are predicting that this song could earn them a Grammy.

Didn't the short fat mean-looking one do a little Bush-bashing at one of her concerts over in England? Said something really derogatory about the president. The DCs were supposed to be a country group which means a lot of fans in the red states and when you diss your fan base, you commit artistic suicide. Not real bright. So their record sales dropped like a brick. Of course it's too late to say she's sorry for dumping on Bush, and nobody would believe her anyway, so her only option is to tough it out. Sort of kiss my you-know-what attitude. That's what the "I'm not ready" song is all about. Which will work fine on the east and left coasts, but not where I live in Arizona. I'm already seeing their CDs in the 2.99 cheap bins.

G'day Clare 06-91,

Thank you for your question.

I'm Not Ready to Make Nice was their response to critics of their stance on the Iraq War. The song went top 40 in both the US and Spain while the album Taking The Long Way has topped country charts around the world as well as the US album charts. Despite this, the song wasn't played on country radio in the US as often as past hits.

The song addresses the criticism with lead singer Natalie Maines singing “I’m not ready to make nice. I’m not ready to back down. I’m still mad as hell and I don’t have time to go round and round and round.”

Natalie Maines of the band said "I don't know that we set out to make a rock record," says Maines. "But we definitely didn't set out to make a country record and I definitely had a bad taste in my mouth." They considered that much of the criticism was unfair.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards

I think its behind the whole controversy about their comments about the president. They got alot of heat for that and they are basically saying "I'm not ready to come to a truce about this, I still dont like you and I dont care"
