If playing by true Monolopy rules, there should be no money in the center, with all money being paid to the bank. The Free Parking thing was just added on later unofficially by people who wanted extra dough. Free Parking is Free Parking, not Paid Parking. But if you are playing with the modified rules then yes, all money in the middle goes to whomever lands on it.

The monopoly official rules say that all taxes, etc. actually go into the bank which eliminates money on free parking. However, I always play that when you land on free parking you get the money!

I have always played it this way, though I was not aware the house sales money went into the centre too, I thought that went directly into the bank

I thought the money was just that collected in the centre was just from the chance cards and prison fines etc, as it would give said player a huge advantage, especially if people are buying loads of property...

Yes! If you put your money from taxes and stuff in the middle of the board then the person who lands on free parking collects it!

HOW I PLAY:

The only money that goes in free parking is money collected from the Community Chest and Chance cards, OR money from taxes. When you buy homes or properties, that money goes to the bank

We actually put $500 on free parking in addition to the taxes, etc. Everytime somebody lands on it, a new $500 goes down.

It's a house rule that many people play with so you have to decide if your house is going to use the rule. It's not a part of the standard Monopoly rules.

Nope. You are not supposed to, and actually some versions of the game come with a F.A.Q. sheet inside with your question as one of the most common ones.
Free parking just means that you can stay in that space and skip your turn for as long as you want.

Not according to the actual rules. However, it is a house rule that we sometimes play with and sometimes without, depending on who we're playing with.
