At no point are the birds in contact with both the wire and the ground- bird flies on to wire, bird flies off wire- if you climbed a pylon and grab the wire, you are then connected to both wire and ground (via the pylon) so the electricity would flow through you...equally when you try to get down by climbing back on to the pylon you are connected to both wire and ground...and you end up smokin' ;-)

probably because to get onto the wire you would have to touch the pylon as well and thats why it would zap you, whereas the birds just land on the wire and do not touch the pylon
