It's all cultural. We can't even attribute it to type of animal--some birds are pets, others dinner, yet all dogs are pets in our culture.

This is completely arbitrary. It goes along with why are insects always exterminated in some cultures, yet used as food in others. It's all cultural, as humans are omnivores, and can derive usable calories from a wide variety of plants and animals.

Some start out as pets and end up as dinner.

My wife and I went on vacation to farm country and toured a dairy farm. While on tour we saw a cow with a wooden leg.

I asked the farmer, "How'd the cow get a wooden leg."

"Well," he said, "the cow is a great milker, she gives 5 gallons of milk more than any other cow I've got. And she's a hero, too. The hay wagon overturned on me and she ran to the house to get help."

"And that's how she lost a leg?" I asked.

"No", he replied, "then the barn caught on fire and she kicked a pail of water on it to put it out."

"And that's how she lost a leg?" I asked again.

"No. Then my son fell down the well and she lowered a rope down to him and held on until he could climb out."

Getting a little annoyed that he hadn't answer my question, I said, "Is that how?"

"No."

"Then how did she loose that leg?"

"With a cow that valuable, you don't eat them all at one time."

I do believe it's called fate! Why are some pet owners sadists and others normal? Why are some people alive while others die in the most horrendous of circumstances? Regardless of the why? Schopenhauer said that the day of our birth brings us a day closer to death...I find that comforting, don't you? :o>

Really it all deals with social norms and religion verses need. Here in the US Dog is taboo, in Korea its dinner. Ethically killing is killing, And we should all become vegetarians
