I would say that it all depends on the kind of day you're having and whether you're being rhetorical or not...

If you're being rhetorical and having a bad day - then it's half empty - coz life just sucks

if you're being rhetorical and having a good day - then it's half full - coz life is great

** if you're speaking about an actual glass in front of you **

if you're having a good day (eg a nice glass of wine that you're halfway thru) then it's half empty - coz you don't want it to end

if you're having a bad day (eg a yucky glass of lemsip and you're halfway thru) then it's half full - coz you still got a long way to go to finish it....

but generally i go with half-full - i'm an optimist

A glass can only be half empty if it was orgionally full.
A glass can only be half full if it is all that was poured in to it.

half full.

this is a common expression, used rhetorically to indicate that a particular situation could be a cause for optimism (half full) or pessimism (half empty)

I am an optimist!

If the drink is coke and grenadine, definitely empty. If the drink is G+T, full.
