Sometimes on startup the hard drive isnt recognized. All the connections are good. Sometimes the computer will completly freeze up and when I try to do anything but shut it off it will beep. I lost all the contents to one hard drive already due to the problem. I know I need to have it taken to the local shop and looked at but just wondering what it could be.

Correction: I had 2 hard drives installed at the same time that I lost, and I have checked the bios previousy to make sure everything is okay. I think it might be the motherboard or proccessor.

for problems like this, i would ask how old is the computer, were there any changes made both hardware (added/removed/chaged peripherals) was there power failure/surge or software (programs installed/removed) just before problem occurred. if there is nothing out of the ordinary i would say check out the hardware first. disconnect everything except the power supply to mobo with the processor of course, a RAM, a video card, floppy drive and keyboard. i would reset the bios to default by shorting a jumper on the mobo or just entering the bios via del key f10 etc. boot the computer using a bootable floppy preferably with a memory diagnostic program like memtest86. if everything's fine then add the other cards cdroms additional memory, mouse etc. don't add OS harddrive yet, just repeat memory diagnostic and if still ok you can add the hardrive chances are it's the one causing the problem, either the drive itself (bad sectors, electronics) or the content (OS corrupted, virus)

Usually while you get an hardware failure reminiscent of video card, processor or ram you'll be able to get a sequence of beep to inform you you may have what the predicament is the precise series is right down to the make of bios. so I do not factor you may have received a video card failure for those who did not get beeps whilst booting. whilst it is in stand by way of have you ever attempted urgent the gap bar to convey it out. an additional factor you'll be able to take a look at have you ever hibernated it if in case you have press F8 whilst booting and delete the recuperation knowledge then reboot. take a look at coming into nontoxic mode

It looks like a hardware problem only. To confirm this try to boot through a floppy and if the system boots and works fine then it could be a software problem or your harddisk connector problem or could be a problem with your hard disk controller card. If the pc does not boot even with floppy then it could be a major hardware problem connected with your mother board.

If it is jumpered and formatted correctly, and connected correctly, and recognized by the BIOS, all that I can suggest is a virus. Run a scan.

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

first of all I think the problem is in the power cable from the power supply to your hard disk. make sure that it never shake and you may change that cable with another one
