they are actually listening to your lungs-not your heart.

there are three chambers to the lungs and to listen to all of them efficiently-the dr has to put the stethoscope in 4 different places. once on your upper back (near your shoulder blades), once on the sides of your waist, once on your lower back and then in the front at the center of your chest which is close to your heart.

with every deep breath in and out-the dr can listen to see if you are moving enough air in and out of your lungs and to also make sure you don't have any fluid in your lungs that would indicate infection.

Taking a deep breath usually is done when checking the lungs, not the heart. That deep breath allows them to hear any congestion in the lungs.

When you breathe you make breathing noises that make it tough to hear the heart.

When you take a deep breath and hold it, the doc gets to hear your lungs take in the air, then gets to hear your heart w/o the breathing noises.

because they are actually checking your breathing, not your heart. if your heart is malfunctioning, your lungs usually start filling up with excess fluids. So, good lungs signify that your heart is doing its job. but the doc does indeed listen to your heart as well.

They're not checking your heart. They're listening to your lung sounds. They can tell if your lungs are clear or not when you breathe deeply.

i always thought they were checking out the lungs when they did that! and the reasoning behind that is to check whether your air passage is clear or blocked with phlegm...

someone inform me if i'm wrong! :)
