I have never experienced it my self and I cant see any sparks when he coughs but he said that it only happens when he is in the dark!!! Help

Yes, I get this. I used to get it more when I smoked. When you have a really forcefull cough, you see little silver flashes orbiting in front of you, like in 3-D, you would swear they are dancing about just in front of you! I assume it's what people say is 'seeing stars'. I saw them in the day too. It's probably nothing, I don't think it's high blood pressure or anything because I know my blood pressure is fine. I don't get it now because I don't cough as hard having stopped smoking.

I recently started worrying when one morning after feeling very tired, I could see bright lights in front of my eyes. I was reading about it after and it seems to happen because of blood loss to the eyes or optic nerves. It's like your brain is interpretting the light in staggers, and not at all in a normal pattern. I've also read someone interpret it as seeing the veins behind your eyes as they are filling up. It's like the pressure of coughing can cause an uneven flow of blood to your eyes, I guess.

The drummer in my band went to the doctors about the same thing, there's a name for it but I forget what it's called. It's perfectly harmless and very common, so do not worry!
