How do you handle your Mom (or Dad) being "Out There"... because _You're_ "Out There" too!

This is weird for me. I accidentally found out my Mom is online meeting guys and has been going out on dates. I feel like I should be going with her (as an escort) because I know how guys can be. She hasn't dated in over 40 years. Men have changed.

Yes my Mother is out there and it's scary to think of her having to date to find companionship she wants or needs.

Things have changed since the 1950's but I think as long as we keep talking about her life and she lets me know where she's going for a date and his name and phone number (for safety) I see it as a good thing.

I don't date any more so it's not a matter of us both being "out there". I mostly feel bad because since my Dad died she's been so lonely and there's nothing much I can do to help.

It's probably as a sort of warning- single mums are looking to date the kind of guys who don't mind the fact that she has kids, don't mind spending time with them, and it's a plus if he doesn't mind spending money on them either. They're checking to see if you can deal with it, because there's no point entering a relationship with someone who can't. If you can't do any of those things, you're not in the right place to be dating single moms, so don't. Alternatively, if you're prepared to do that, you just want some alone time- explain that to them. If you want better dates, date people in situations you can deal with- and being a self proclaimed jerk doesn't help. These single moms might be on Yahoo! now, asking why a lot of guys ask them out, and then are not only totally turned off at the idea of spending time with their kids, but jerks about it it.

This is the point where you see your "mom" as a person. You may not know her quite as well as you think. Take this opportunity to find out who she is and what her dreams and ambitions are. Just because there's snow on the roof doesn't mean that there's no fire in the furnace.

My mother and father have been dead - a long time. But I truly do empathize. At my age, the greater, more frequent shocks are grandparents I know finding their granddaughter's [often risque] myspace site.
