it depends on your budget Cannon makes awesome cams but their cheapest high quality cam is still over $1000....i have friends that have completed short films using digital cameras that cost about $200 just make sure it captures video , rechargable batteries-$15-$20, and large memory cards at least 1GB-$30-$40....and some other source of recording...and outside boom mic(search yahoo for best price) with connections to a laptop to record the sound a lot more crisp than a digi cam can and then its all about the editing software you use.....also while filming lighting is key!!! thats why hollywood movies look better than real life!!! CONTROL THE LIGHTING!!.....good luck with that if you get one done you can get it out there via tha site below....theres tons of independent shorts there too check it out!!!

The Canon XL series digitals are great. They use them for many sitcoms now. They are about $5,000.
