Cork is right. The question is an idea proposed by conservatives. It smacks of class warfare and is very Machivellian. It suggests that nobody is a humanist anymore. It suggests that greed is the only motivating force.
And worst of all, it suggests that benefit from government spending is a zero sum game. WRONG!

Government is a tool for Politicians. It is intended to control, or "govern". I think greed, self righteousness, and ignorance are the reasons some people treat other people badly, and with no regard. As a nation the United States is miss informed. Not only about world politics, but the true state of their own nation. If you travel abroad at all, other countries paint a different picture. They can see the "forest for the trees" they can label things that are obvious. They can call it a "housing crisis" even if the President can not. In order for our politicians to stay in power, control, and to have their party lead the "Government" they do anything, even lie. It's about them, it's about ego. It's about time to get out of the 6 o'clock news, and the televised Presidential smoke screens, (I mean speeches), and educate ourselves. Otherwise your opinion of Politicians & Government will be somehting you can barely recall seeing on a commercial break that was paid for by them to promote them, with the convenient side affect of brainwashing the masses. All you have is your opinion, and if you vote you have a slight chance at making a difference.

To a moderate, government is an agency from which one expects a few services competently delivered like, a school system, water and waste treatment, roads and airports. A moderate expects to elect officials who will run the affairs of state, balance the budget, and streamline the government.
Liberals and Conservatives view government as some sort of social and philosophical battleground.

Government is just a tool society uses to organize SOME of it's behaviors.
Other kinds of society behaviors are organized through more "organic", far more fluidly complex means.

If everyone is living off of everyone else, then that means that everyone is living off of everyone ELSE as well. Sounds like the government, according to your logic, is working in perfect harmony. :)

Seems to be the way especially if you are a democrat - just to much government redistribution of income.
