I would suggest a heavier stick to practice with as that will build up your wrist muscles. Try to get at least half an hour a day on the practice pad. I have been drumming in bands off and on since the 60's. My Son, Dan, drums for the band Nickelback. Good luck and hit hard!

Well not a chicken drumstick.

Go to a shop and test out a few. See what you like based on grip, texture, feel of the stick when you hit the skins.

Don't go for brands, just pick up one you feel comfortable with. It doesn't matter even if they feel like they might be thrashed after a few months, go for what feels good before you start contemplating getter branded or more expensive ones.

depends also on the type heads your using. as a player of drums for 30 years. i use 5a and 5 b sticks maple with plastic tip. you can get pack deals to start with as sticks can run up to a c-note.

When I started drumming I used a 7A, which was a mistake, too light. I started using and still use a 2B, natural tip, because nylon tips add too much "ping" to the cymbals.

5B is very good and fairly light, too. If you want something a little heavier though, get 1A.
