Just let it dry. It'll be ok. Just don't use it before it dries. I'd wait like a week just to make sure.

Safe to use once dry

Whether or not it will work though largely depends on how-much water got it, and how shielded your delicate components are...some higher-end laptops will easily survive brief immersion so long as not to water-logged, but most are throw-aways.

As for drying - DON"T use the hair-dryer. You can do more harm than good by frying any components that survived the drowning process. Sit it in a warm, well-aired space and allow a few days to dry.
I would however STRONGLY urge you to replace the battery even if the laptop has survived - even once dried the battery will be at high risk of exploding on you.

You should however get it looked at once you establish whether or not it works - corrosion can be a delayed process, and this can also present as a fire danger. Once dry, plug in via power-pack to check if it is working, then take to you local IT repairer for a thorough check-over

Also remove the battery! To hasten the drying process, use a hair dryer to blow cold air through the vents - for over an hour or two. Then leave in a warm place for as long as possible. The water may have shorted out the CMOS battery as well - Good luck!

You should wait at least an hour after eating ;-)
Seriously though, why do you want to drop it in water? You say 'if' so that indicates you're just thinking about doing it but haven't actually done it. IF you're planning on dropping it in water, why not just plan on dropping in fire as well. That would at least dry it much quicker ;-)
