I'm not a mechanic but I was the very regretful owner of a Volvo 760 GLE Turbo Diesel, and knew another man who also was a regretful owner of such. This was back in the 1980's I believe, and you haven't said what year model your car is, so I can only tell you that the model that other man and I had was HORRIBLE with it's electronics as you describe and more, and I was never so glad to get rid of a car as I was glad to get rid of that one. The other man, a physician in town, called his Volvo 760 GLE Turbo Diesel "the black hole of finances" since he had to spend incredible amounts of money repairing his, as I did. The end result of my experiences was that my wife had to take a business trip to Dallas and the car went totally "bonkers" on her late at night as she was returning to the hotel, and a Dallas policeman picked her up and took her to her hotel. The next day we got a tow truck to pick it up and tow it approximately 100 or so miles to someone who would look at it and "assess the damage" wherein the mechanic said it was a "total meltdown" electronically, and the engine wouldn't do anything, so he agreed to take it for a hundred or so bucks, and I bought my wife a Subaru. I have always loved Volvos, and my sister owned a Volvo wagon, and so I'm not, or was not, against Volvo, but from the description you give of your problems, I'd ditch the thing and get a different car. My experiences with it, as well as the local physician who owned the exact model I did, back in the 1980's, steers me waaayyy away from Volvo due to the horrid electronic difficulties they had, and may still be having. I think they did drop the 760 series and make a new one called the 740 GLE Turbo Diesel, and I know an old lady who owns one and has had much better luck with it. God Bless you.

first off , mid and early volvo 760 740s had biodegradable wiring looms ( sounds daft , it aint ! , volvo just didnt calculate the heat exposure the loom gets , and they get brittle and fail prematurely , ) any volvo owners club member will tell you , most common from the starter motor up , and around the alternator , , i own a 760 and mine are almost down to bare wire , cant tell you were your problem will be , but can guarantee it is related to the brittle loom , failing this if youre rev counter jumps up and down while driving , you have a failing diode in your alternator q- 2 for the cd only way is to find your self a multimeter , test the wires you have from the car in and out of your multi plug , should have one wire 12v+ with ignition on , and another wire with 12v+ constant even with ignition on or off , this is your memory , if not fish about under the dash for the missing loose wire ( it will be there ) , on the cd player , memory is usually orange ( but dont hold me to that ! depends on age of cd etc )

no want to panic, not in basic terms yet. enable's attempt to save it straight forward by technique of checking the basics. Have u checked for a blown fuse(s)? If fuse ok attempt transferring the dimmer swap decrease to and fro to confirm if there is signal of existence. If lights flicker even as transferring the swap thethn a failing dimmer swap is at fault. as far because the gas gauge is going first be particular your not actual low on gasoline. Have a minimum of 5gals. of gas in ur tank. commence your automobile and slap the sprint in basic terms above the gas gauge section such as your fingers and be conscious if strikes if operating after. If the slap attempt wakes up the gauge then it needs change.good luck!
