The most effective means of running any ADSL device, especially if trying to network, is to avoid the cheaper USB devices, opting instead for devices which instead have their own power source and connecting via the LAN port or Wireless Card (available for both Laptop and Desktop systems)

The problem with running ADSL through a PC is that you need to keep the host PC turned on for any other computer to make use of your network connection - it also creates potential for the host PC to choke your network bandwidth, either because it gets first priotity, or because of a slow down of some sort within the PC itself.

The purpose of a router is to allow each device equal access to network capabilities, but this can only effectively occur where the modem is connected directly to your phone socket, and the router is directly linked to your model.

Hope this helps - oh and the other advantage of direct connecting and making use of your LAN inputs is you generally don't require all the extra software to run it....much easier...and faster :)

You need a real DSL modem (one with an Ethernet port) - then you can connect it to the router and away you go!

With WinXP you can use internet connection sharing with your DSL modem, but that's not particularly reliable and can't do anything with the router, anyway (Since even though you can communicate with the router via your PC and set up it's wireless configuration, it has no Internet connectivty via it's WAN port without a modem plugged in).

Get a DSL modem with an ethernet port, and all is well.

I assume you mean you have a Desktop PC with ADSL access to the internet connected thru USB.
You also have a laptop / wireless home network.
You want the Laptop to be able to access the internet ( and home network ) thru the ADSL modem on your Desktop.

If this is the case and your running XP you need Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) set up on your Desktop.

It's quite easy to set up search for ICS in your XP help and support ( or on the net )
